Understanding Substack’s Fee Structure
Substack is free to use for publishing, but they take a flat 10% cut of all subscription revenue. However, many creators forget about the payment processor (Stripe).
Stripe charges 2.9% + 30 cents per transaction. Because of that fixed 30-cent fee, selling a $5 subscription means you actually lose a much higher percentage of your gross revenue to Stripe than if you were selling a $20 subscription. Our calculator accurately subtracts both to show your true take-home pay.
